Whether you like it or not, the 90’s are back! I, for one, am absolutely living for 90’s fashion trends. Mom jeans? Bring it on. Scrunchies? Can’t get enough. Chunky white sneakers? OH HELL YES. Recently, pop star and queen of everything Rihanna was photographed at a basketball game wearing a bucket hat and, just like that, they are back! This inspired me to create my own crochet version of the *iconic* 90’s hat.
Unlike a traditional crochet beanie that stretches to fit your head, bucket hats hold their shape. Because of this, I decided to go with a nice sturdy cotton yarn – Lily’s Sugar and Cream. This yarn is a classic! It’s very inexpensive and I’ve used it for so many different projects. For the bucket hat, I chose the color “Indigo” since the dark denim fits with the 90’s vibe.
The pattern as written below is sized for an adult head, but you can easily adjust the size by simply adding or eliminating rounds. As far as skills needed, you should be able to create a magic circle, single crochet in the round, and crochet in the front and back loops. It’s a quick and easy project so you can make a hat in every color. Ready to re-live the 90’s? Then grab your hook and let’s get started!
Materials
- Size 4 (worsted weight) cotton yarn – I used approximately 180 yards (or 1.5 skeins) of Lily’s Sugar and Cream in “Indigo”
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle
Abbreviations
- SC = single crochet
- St = stitch(es)
- Rnd = round
- * = repeat until end of round
Instructions
Create a magic circle.
Rnd 1: 6 SC in magic circle (6). Use a stitch marker to help keep track of the first st in the rnd.
Rnd 2: 2 SC in each st (12)
Rnd 3: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next st* (18)
Rnd 4: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 2 st* (24)
Rnd 5: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 3 st* (30)
Rnd 6: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 4 st* (36)
Rnd 7: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 5 st* (42)
Rnd 8: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 6 st* (48)
Rnd 9: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 7 st* (54)
Rnd 10: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 8 st* (60)
Rnd 11: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 9 st* (66)
Rnd 12: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 10 st* (72)
Rnd 13: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 11 st* (78)
Rnd 14: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 12 st* (84)
You are now finished with the top flat part of the hat, and will begin working your way down.
Rnd 15: 1 SC in back loops only in each st (84)
Rnd 16: 1 SC in each st (84)
Rnd 17 – 34: Repeat row 16.
You will begin on the brim of the hat.
Rnd 35: *In the front loops only: 2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 13 st* (90)
Rnd 36: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 14 st* (96)
Rnd 37: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 15 st* (102)
Rnd 38: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 16 st* (108)
Rnd 39: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 17 st* (114)
Rnd 40: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 18 st* (120)
Rnd 41: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 19 st* (126)
Rnd 42: 1 SC in each st (126)
Cut and tie off yarn. Weave in ends using a tapestry needle.
That’s a wrap, folks! You can now swing in to style with your brand new bucket hat.

Hello! Love the look of this hat! Was unsure whether this is this worked in a spiral as you do not state to sl st or chain at the end of each round?
Thank you(:

Hi there! Thanks! Sorry for not specifying in the pattern – I used a sl st at the end of each round. Hope this helps!

Does sl st mean a slip stitch at the end of the round? I’m on round 30 and haven’t done that for any of my rounds.
Thanks, Livvy

Yes, you will slip stitch in to the first stitch in the round. Then start on the next round. Hope this helps!

Hello,
You mention row 15 back loops only. Is it the same with rows 16 thru 34? Back loops only?
LikeLike
Hi Cindy! No, 16-34 will be regular single crochets. Only row 15 will be back loops only.

Thank you! One more question. Is row 36 thru 41 front loops only?

Just one query, the top part of my hat is actually pointed not flat do you know why this is ?

Hi Grace! Hmm I’m not quite sure. Sometimes when crocheting in the round, it doesn’t end up completely flat. Could be that your gauge is tight, or the yarn size is a bit bigger than what I used, or perhaps a few extra stitches were added by mistake. Perhaps try it again with looser stitches and careful stitch counting? Good luck!!

My hat came out way too big. I used an H hook like it says, but it’s too large. The brim doesn’t look right either, because I don’t know if row 36-41 are in the front loops or in both loops. I may have to use one size hook down to get a smaller hat.

This is my first real project following a pattern! It’s turning out great so far (even though I forgot the sl stitch at the end of each round). Thank you for making this pattern it was so simple!

hey! i have a quick question.
do you turn the hat inside out before you do the brim? looks like in the picture you have inside out stitches and not regular
also in row 15 whenever you crochet in just the back loops, are the front loops supposed to show on the outside? or just hide on the inside of the hat?
thank you for this amazing pattern!!

Hi Emily! You will not turn the hat inside out to do the brim. By single crocheting in the back loops only in round 15, it creates the outward fold of the brim. The front loops will be tucked in the inside of the hat when you wear it. Make sure you only do back loops only on row 15, then continue with regular single crochets to finish the brim. Hope this makes sense!! Good luck!

Ok so, I made the top part of the hat using the single crochet like you said but it came out super small!! Did I mess up some how?? Was it a typo?? I have no idea!

Hi Hannah! Maybe it’s your yarn size? Are you using smaller than worsted weight? Also you can always adjust and add a few more rounds to make it bigger if need be!

Hi darsi, I am a beginner I taught myself by the internet on the phone 7months ago. I have made T-Towel holder, and Ear savers for face masks. This pattern I just wrote down appears easy and the questions I had were the same you answered so very simple. Thank you cant wait to try it and get the yarn color I want. Have a great day be safe everyone.

If I chose to add a few more inc rows to the top part of the hat, would i still start off at the 13 st for the brim ? or start from where i stopped for the top of the hat ?
LikeLike
Great question! You would start from where you stopped at the top of the hat. So for example if you added two more rounds, increasing every 13th and 14th stitch, you would then work your way down the body of the hat and then increase every 15th stitch on the brim (and so on after that). Hope that makes sense. Good luck!!

Hey there! For rounds 36-41 are all the stitches in the front loops?

Hi! Nope, you will crochet 36-41 in both loops. Hope this helps 🙂

Hi, thank you so much for your pattern, it is lovely! I have a question: when starting a new round, do you start stitching in the same stitch where you just slip stitched? or on the next one? I’m having trouble with making the cylindrical part of the hat truly cylindrical, I always end up with extra stitches but I do not purposely add any.
Hope my question made sense,
Thanks again

Hi Sofia! Yes you will just start the new round by crocheting the first stitch in the slipped stitch from the beginning of the previous round. Placing a stitch marker in that slipped stitch helps to keep track of where the round begins and may help prevent you from adding stitches. Hope this helps. Good luck!!

I’d love to make this for a male adult. I know bucket hats are designed to keep their shape. Does this hat have a little give? Maybe I should add 1 or two rounds to the first part to make sure it fits his head?
LikeLike
Hi!! The hat does have a little give, but to be on the safe side I definitely recommend adding a couple rounds to the first part of the hat. Good luck!!
