Whether you like it or not, the 90’s are back! I, for one, am absolutely living for 90’s fashion trends. Mom jeans? Bring it on. Scrunchies? Can’t get enough. Chunky white sneakers? OH HELL YES. Recently, pop star and queen of everything Rihanna was photographed at a basketball game wearing a bucket hat and, just like that, they are back! This inspired me to create my own crochet version of the *iconic* 90’s hat.
Unlike a traditional crochet beanie that stretches to fit your head, bucket hats hold their shape. Because of this, I decided to go with a nice sturdy cotton yarn – Lily’s Sugar and Cream. This yarn is a classic! It’s very inexpensive and I’ve used it for so many different projects. For the bucket hat, I chose the color “Indigo” since the dark denim fits with the 90’s vibe.
The pattern as written below is sized for an adult head, but you can easily adjust the size by simply adding or eliminating rounds. As far as skills needed, you should be able to create a magic circle, single crochet in the round, and crochet in the front and back loops. It’s a quick and easy project so you can make a hat in every color. Ready to re-live the 90’s? Then grab your hook and let’s get started!
- Size 4 (worsted weight) cotton yarn – I used approximately 180 yards (or 1.5 skeins) of Lily’s Sugar and Cream in “Indigo”
- Size H (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Stitch marker
- Tapestry needle
- SC = single crochet
- St = stitch(es)
- Rnd = round
- * = repeat until end of round
Create a magic circle.
Rnd 1: 6 SC in magic circle (6). Use a stitch marker to help keep track of the first st in the rnd.
Rnd 2: 2 SC in each st (12)
Rnd 3: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next st* (18)
Rnd 4: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 2 st* (24)
Rnd 5: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 3 st* (30)
Rnd 6: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 4 st* (36)
Rnd 7: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 5 st* (42)
Rnd 8: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 6 st* (48)
Rnd 9: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 7 st* (54)
Rnd 10: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 8 st* (60)
Rnd 11: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 9 st* (66)
Rnd 12: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 10 st* (72)
Rnd 13: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 11 st* (78)
Rnd 14: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in the next 12 st* (84)
You are now finished with the top flat part of the hat, and will begin working your way down.
Rnd 15: 1 SC in back loops only in each st (84)
Rnd 16: 1 SC in each st (84)
Rnd 17 – 34: Repeat row 16.
You will begin on the brim of the hat.
Rnd 35: *In the front loops only: 2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 13 st* (90)
Rnd 36: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 14 st* (96)
Rnd 37: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 15 st* (102)
Rnd 38: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 16 st* (108)
Rnd 39: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 17 st* (114)
Rnd 40: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 18 st* (120)
Rnd 41: *2 SC in one st. 1 SC in next 19 st* (126)
Rnd 42: 1 SC in each st (126)
Cut and tie off yarn. Weave in ends using a tapestry needle.
That’s a wrap, folks! You can now swing in to style with your brand new bucket hat.
